Newspaper articles

Newspapers are a good source of up-to-date information. However, they are aimed at a general audience, and do not tend to be very technical or detailed. They are not peer-reviewed and can very often be erroneous or biased.

Online videos

DEFRA: YouTube channel: Official videos from the UK Government Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (DEFRA).
Euromonitor International: YouTube channel: Market Research video summaries from Euromonitor (publisher of the respected Global Market Information Database)
FAO: YouTube channel: Official videos from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO).
FSA: YouTube channel: Official videos from the UK Food Standards Agency.
MediaHub: From off-campus, search for 'Huddersfield', then login. Explore by subject, to access to several major video archives including: ITN/Reuters, Getty images, Associated Press, and the Wellcome Library.

Scientific Journals Databases

Add to the results you've identified on Summon by using these specialist journal databases to find quality articles for your assignments. The following databases provide details of relevant journal articles (usually including an abstract) and in some cases may also provide a link to the article itself.

This resource draws on the connections between the environment and a variety of disciplines such as agriculture, education, law, health and technology. Topics covered include global climate change, green building, pollution, sustainable agriculture, renewable energy, recycling and more.

Database that contains over 21 million references to journal articles in life sciences with a concentration on biomedicine.

A large abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature from more than 18,500 journals.
PubMed This link opens in a new window
Includes details of articles which have not yet been included in the full version of Medline. Many of these PreMedline articles don't have abstracts, but this is one of the most up to date biomedical databases available. It also includes some links from references to full-text journals.

Market research, from reputable sources, is usually not freely available. We subscribe to several sources of market information which are available here:

UK market research reports on a wide range of sectors including food, drink, health & wellbeing, and foodservice. Provides information such as market sizes, trends, and segmentation. To register for access to Mintel from off-campus, enter your unimail address to receive a validation code.

In addition to journal articles, Business Source Complete also provides access to industry profiles and market research reports.

Specialist eBook collection

A database of ebooks, including a collection of Food Science reference works. Search by subject 'keywords', or manipulate and extract data from live tables and graphs. Please be aware that some premium content is not available within our subscription.
