An introduction to newspaper resources at the University of Huddersfield Library

Introduction

This guide introduces the different resources to find newspapers in the University Library. It focuses on a range of electronic packages we subscribe to, as well as a number of free public sites available via the internet.

If you have any questions, please contact library@hud.ac.uk for advice from a librarian.

Searching Summon for newspapers

Summon retrieves newspaper articles from most of our databases. Search for your topic and use the left hand filters to select Newspaper Article as the Content type.

Use the Publication date option to search across specific months or years.

You can use the advanced search to identify a specific newspaper in which to search; type in the name and select Publication Title from the drop down menu.

NB. Some of our databases allow deep linking, where Summon can take you to the exact article (e.g. International Newsstream), others will take you as far as the newspaper landing page, and you will need to search for the article again within the database (e.g. Lexis+ UK Newspapers).

A list of newspaper subscriptions

You can use the Journals A-Z list on the front page of Summon to check to which newspapers the University subscribes.

This list will also tell you which newspaper archive each title is hosted by, so you can choose the most relevant one for your research.

Citing a newspaper article

Advice on how to cite a newspaper item is available in our APA 7th referencing guide

This includes information on how to cite online newspaper articles accessed from a newspaper website or found through a library database (e.g. Summon or International Newsstream).
