The Basics: Searching for and borrowing materials

An introduction to some of the basics of using the library and computing facilities at the University of Huddersfield

Searching for Library Materals

Searching for Library materials

Your lecturers provide lists of useful items to read, watch or listen to for your modules, which are available on UniLearn, or by selecting ‘reading lists’ from Summon.

You can also search Summon, the Library’s search engine, for all books and other items held in the Library. Summon also searches online sources, including electronic journals and ebooks.

Summon can be accessed via the Student Hub or the ‘Library’ tab on UniLearn.

For other specialist resources, see your library subject guides.

Borrowing from the library

Borrowing from the Library

You can borrow and return books and other items using the self-service machines on floor 4.

Undergraduates: 15 items

Postgraduates: 20 items

Most items can be borrowed until either the item is requested, your Library account is due to expire or you no longer need them.

If an item you want has been borrowed by someone else, you can request it via Summon.

It will be put on the reservation shelf on floor 4 of the Library when returned and you will be emailed at your Unimail address.

For further information about requesting and reservations, please see our borrowing pages.

Checking your library account

You can check your library account on campus by using a self-service machine or you can also access it via Summon (or by logging into Student Portal), both of which can be accessed on and off campus, you will need your campus card which will have your unique ID number (e.g. U1234567)

Click on the "Library account" tab and enter your login details to:

  • Check which items you have on loan.
  • See whether items you have requested are ready for collection.
