Dawsonera is one of the main ebook platforms for ebooks at the University of Huddersfield. Dawsonera has ebooks covering a wide range of subjects. This guide explains how to find and use ebooks available on Dawsonera, and answers frequently asked questions.

Computer requirements

Dawsonera ebooks can be used on Windows and Mac computers, as well as iOS and Android mobile devices.

You will need the following software to download ebooks from Dawsonera

  • Laptop or desktop computer - Adobe Reader for PDF ebooks and Adobe Digital Editions for EPUB ebooks.
  • iOS devices - Adobe Reader for PDF ebooks or Bluefire Reader for EPUB ebooks.
  • Android devices - Adobe Reader for PDF ebooks or Bluefire Reader for EPUB ebooks.

Can I read a Dawsonera ebook online?

You can read all Dawsonera ebooks online. Click the read online button on any ebook to read without downloading.

I am asked to join a queue - Why am I unable to read or download a Dawsonera ebook?

Some ebooks have restrictions on how many people can access the book at one time. When the user limit is reached, the option to join the queue will replace the read online and download options. This will reserve the book for you, and you will be notified by email when the book is available to read. 

Do I need any specific software to read an ebook online?

Reading ebooks online only requires an internet connection and up to date browser. You shouldn't need to install anything to read online. 

Can I download to my own device?

You can download entire books for a specified time period. Dawsonera will ask you to choose how long to download your book for.

I'm asked to select a download length for an ebook? What should I do?

Select your preferred loan length from the drop down menu and click download. After your loan expires you will not be able to access the book on a device without downloading it again.

Do I need any specific software to download?

Dawsonera ebooks are delivered as secure PDF files or in the EPUB format so you can't save or copy from them in the same way as a standard PDF. You will need to install specific software or apps to read the ebook depending on which device you are using and whether the book is in the PDF or EPUB format.

Can I copy from a Dawsonera ebook?

Usually up to 10% of a title from the read online version. Once you have copied content from a page you can make further copies of that page without affecting your remaining allowance.

Copying is only available from the read online version of a Dawsonera ebook.

Can I print from a Dawsonera ebook?

Usually up to 10% of a title from the read online version. Once you have printed a page you may print that page again without affecting your remaining allowance.

Can I save an ebook to return to later?

Dawsonera has a bookshelf feature. You can use this to save books to return to another time. To save ebooks to your bookshelf click the star icon on the ebook details page.

Can I bookmark a specific chapter or page?

You can't bookmark specific chapters or pages in Dawsonera.

Can I make notes on an ebook using Dawsonera?

Notes can be added to an ebook when using the online reader. It is not possible to add notes or annotate a downloaded ebook.
