VADS is the online resource for visual arts. It has built up a considerable portfolio of visual art collections comprising over 100,000 images that are freely available and copyright cleared for use in learning, teaching and research in the UK.

TinEye MultiColor Search Lab
Search Creative Commons images by colour to find images in the exact colour you need. TinEye has extracted the colors from 20 million Creative Commons images on Flickr to make the images searchable by color.

Online collections from the The Met in New York. Many images in the public domain making them available for use. Filter allows you to search for public domain artworks.
British Library Images Online
Europeana
The image collection on Europeana comes from galleries, libraries, archives and museums from all over Europe. Collections include art and fashion.

Copyright protected collections

Re-use normally permitted if it is for private study or education purposes. Images can't be used or adapted for commercial purposes.

LIFE photo archive hosted by Google. Most images available for personal non-commercial use only.
New York Public Library Digital Collections
This collection is regularly updated with new materials added every day, featuring prints, photographs, maps, manuscripts, streaming video, and more. Many images are in the public domain.
RIBA Architecture Image Library
Lo-resolution images available can be used for private study or as part of research for a non-commercial purpose provided full credit to the photographer is given.
