MyReading: Library processes

What does the library do with my reading list?

We run regular reports to check for updates to reading lists, so you don't need to let the library know if you have added new items or made any changes.

The reading list reports are reviewed by the library team. We check items added against current library holdings, review the number of copies in stock, check for ebook availability and decide if any additional print copies are required. New books or extra copies are ordered for the library and ebook access set up where available.

The library team will contact the module leader if there are any problems or issues with updates to a reading list.

How long will it take for an item to be in the library once I’ve added it to a reading list?

Once the item has been added to the reading list, it will require a number of checks by library staff to see if copies require ordering. We can offer the following average turnarounds for material:

Print: 4 weeks from ordering.

Electronic: 72 hours (during working days) from ordering.

We will endeavour to keep to these timelines, but at busy times or low stock availability (from suppliers or out of print titles), these may change. If anything is required urgently, please contact us and we will do our best to help.

Can I add scanned book chapters and journal articles to MyReading?

Yes, just follow the instructions on either adding a journal article or a book chapter to your list and we will do the rest. This will involve copyright checks to ensure content can be added. See our copyright information for some more detail.

Journal articles check

When a journal article is added to a list, library staff check the link works and if we don't have access to an online subscription, we can digitise our print stock or order a digital copy from the British Library to be added to the MyReading. We will contact you if there are any issues.

Book chapters check

When a book chapter is added to a list, library staff check for ebook access (already owned or to order) or, if no ebook available, we will provide a scan of the relevant chapter on MyReading where possible. We will contact you of there are any issues to do with copyright or availability.

Additional information: Where a specific chapter is required to have been read by all students, use the "book chapter" template. If you require the entire book to be made available, please add this as a separate entry as a book on your reading list, highlighting any relevant chapters to your students in thenotes field.

How long does it take to digitise a book chapter for MyReading?

This depends on a number of factors; whether we have a copy of the item in the library, if a request needs to be sent to the British Library or additional copyright permissions are required. We will let you know if there are any problems or if we can’t create a copy for you.

What happens if the library can't purchase a copy of an item on a reading list?

Occasionally, the library may be unable to purchase a copy of an item added to a reading list. Reasons for this can include a booking being out of print and no suitable second hand copies being available to purchase.  The library will contact you if we are unable to purchase a copy of an item added to a reading list.
