Whether you are just feeling a bit jaded by life or think you may be experiencing a mental health condition such as depression or anxiety, we have reading which can help. Or for some escapism, find yourself a good book to curl up with from our HudReads leisure reading collection. You can also check out our Naxos playlists for some chilled listening to help you relax. We also have a wide range of books in the Library on topics such as wellbeing, positive psychology, neurodiversity and body image. There is a small sample of useful books on this page, but for more books on topics of your choice, search Library Search.
HudReads is a collection of leisure reading books which can be found on floor 4 of the Library. It's available for students and staff of the University to browse and borrow from whenever the Library is open. You'll find plenty of popular and literary fiction there, also books on food, travel, self-help and biographies. Find a list of the full HudReads collection here.
Reading Well for mental health provides helpful information and support for managing common mental health conditions, or dealing with difficult feelings and experiences. Some books also include personal stories from people who are living with or caring for someone with mental health needs. Our Reading Well book selection provides you with key reading materials on a variety of wellbeing topics. You can read some of the books online, or find them in the library.
Naxos is a huge collection of classical music recordings which we subscribe to. It includes some of the most famous conductors, singers and orchestras in the world. Even if you aren't in the habit of listening to classical music, it can be a wonderful way of de-stressing, so why not explore Naxos and see what it has to offer? Our Music Librarian, Janet di Franco, has put together some calming playlists, which are a good place to start.
