Introduction to the Informed Researcher sessions

Our Informed Researcher sessions are designed to help you build on your skills, knowledge, ability and techniques to do research at post-graduate level. The sessions also provide you with a foundation in collaborative skills. The majority of sessions are held online via Teams but some are held in person on campus in the Library. Sessions run throughout the year and should be booked via SkillsForge. If you cannot find a date for the session you are interested in please email library@hud.ac.uk with your enquiry.

Referencing and Reference management software sessions

Referencing and citing


This session aims to familiarise participants with the importance of avoiding plagiarism and bad academic practice and demonstrating academic integrity, through an understanding of referencing and citing.

The topics covered include:

  • Defining plagiarism and understanding why it is important to credit others work
  • Identifying the main components of a reference and citation
  • Explaining common errors in sample references
  • How to produce accurate in-text citations
  • Referencing different types of information.

NB the examples given in this session will be in the APA 7th format which is the University's preferred referencing style.

Using EndNote to organise your references

 

This session aims to introduce participants to EndNote reference management software and how it integrates with Microsoft Word to store and manage references and create reference lists.

Topics covered include:

  • Creating your EndNote library
  • Building your EndNote library by adding a variety of resources
  • Editing and managing your EndNote library
  • Automatically inserting citations and references into Word documents from EndNote

NB This session runs both in-person and online via Teams. If you attend the online Teams session you will be expected to download EndNote to your laptop and have done some preliminary work on creating and building your EndNote library with the help of a self-guided workbook.

Informed Researcher sessions

Keeping your research up to date

 

This session aims to introduce researchers to the benefits of different tools you can use to keep up to date with new research in your area.

Topics covered include:

  • Creating keyword search alerts in databases
  • Creating journal alerts
  • Creating citation alerts
  • Using academic discussion lists
  • Using social media as an academic research tool

NB Illustrative examples will be given using Scopus.

Managing your digital academic profile

 

This session aims to inform and demonstrate to participants the importance of having a consistent, professional digital profile as a researcher.

Topics covered include:

  • Identifying relevant and useful ways of using social media to promote academic scholarship
  • An introduction to ORCiD
  • How to mange and measure the impact of an online presence
  • How to promote and disseminate research

Archive Informed Researcher session

Introduction to Archives and Archival Research

 

This session aims to introduce participants to archives as research resources using the University of Huddersfield's Archives and Special Collections held at Heritage Quay as a starting point.

Topics covered include:

  • Defining what archives are
  • Finding out about what user services to expect from archive repositories
  • Exploring the spaces at Heritage Quay and the archives collections it holds
  • Learning how to search online archive catalogues to find archives relevant to the participant's area of research
