Students on Distance Learning Courses: Getting started

A general guide to using library resources for students on distance learning courses, who may never come onto campus.

Getting Your Library Card

You only need a library card for the University of Huddersfield if you're planning on coming to Huddersfield and visiting the library, you don't need it to access any other university services or resources from a distance.

However, if you're close enough to want to visit the university library, you can email us at library@hud.ac.uk and we will prepare your card for you. Then you'll have to come and pick it up from the University library; please see the campus map so you know where to find us!

Brightspace

Brightspace is the University’s virtual learning environment (VLE) which provides access to module information, course content, and discussion forums supporting your studies. When you log in you will see a home page for your school that contains important information. There will also be areas for each module that you are enrolled on.

Brightspace Pulse: this is a free app you can use on your mobile device to keep up-to-date with the latest announcements from your modules. Search for 'Brightspace pulse' on your app store.

Logging in and Resetting Your Password

Please register for our online password reset service. By setting up some security details, you will be able to change your password online at any time wherever you are. Don't get locked out, lock in your security details now!

If you have forgotten your password and haven't already registered with the password reset system, please email it.support@hud.ac.uk for assistance. You can also access our IT support on (01484) 473737 24 hours a day.

You will use the same username and password for logging on to all University systems, e.g. email, Summon, Brightspace, My Hud, HudHelp, etc.

Your username is the letter u followed by seven numbers; this will have been provided to you via email or letter from the university - your tutor should be able to help if you can't find it.

e.g. u1234567

Your default password will be based on your date of birth in the format ddmmmyy, e.g. 23feb95. You will be prompted to change this when you log in for the first time.
