Students on Distance Learning Courses: Referencing

A general guide to using library resources for students on distance learning courses, who may never come onto campus.

Library Referencing Support

The University of Huddersfield Library can provide support with using the APA 7th referencing style, the default used for most of our courses. We've listed some useful links below including referencing guides and bibliographic management software. You'll also find that tools like Summon can export references for you in APA 7th style.

You can access support for referencing from your librarians at Huddersfield via HudHelp, or by emailing library@hud.ac.uk. You can also book an appointment with a Subject Librarian here.

Referencing guides

Huddersfield APA referencing guide An alphabetical list of resources with explanations about how to reference them. Most resource types include online reference builders. Fill in the form with the details of the thing that you're referencing, and the reference builder will create a reference that you can simply copy and paste into your work. You can also download a PDF guide with similar examples from these pages.

RefWorks

ProQuest RefWorks is a cloud-based tool that integrates with Summon. It allows you to save your Summon search results in a permanent, cloud-based folder. Access to RefWorks is available to anyone registering using a University of Huddersfield email account.

RefWorks can be used to automatically create references in various styles, including APA 7th. You can also share collections of references with other RefWorks users.

Please see our RefWorks Guide for how to register and use, with instructions and videos.

EndNote

EndNote is desktop software which enables you to store and manage references. It also links to Word so that you can build a list of references automatically as you write and re-format them easily in different styles.

References from Summon and other electronic databases can be imported directly into your EndNote library, or added manually.
