Students on Distance Learning Courses: Home

A general guide to using library resources for students on distance learning courses, who may never come onto campus.

Welcome to this guide for students on a distance learning course, that is, any of the University of Huddersfield Courses that are run on a distance learning basis.  You may never come onto our campus although you are welcome to do so but you'll be doing a course that leads to a University of Huddersfield qualification.

This guide will focus on the library services you can access at a distance, but if you're local, or just passing through, you're welcome to pick up a student card and visit us. The reading you'll be expected to do as part of your course should be available online via your module reading lists in Brightspace. You may also be able to use another university library closer to you. We'll cover how to do this, and more later on.

This guide contains links to useful resources, help with using the online library, links to our referencing support, and information on where to go for extra help.

If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us at library@hud.ac.uk

Local Library Access and General Support

Your tutors may also be able to help with many questions in finding, using, and referencing information for your assignments, and can guide you towards the right resources too. They are experienced in supporting students studying at a distance and will try to make sure you can access everything you need.

HudHelp is the main route to get IT and Library support and you'll find many frequently asked questions answered there, as well as links to further support. There are also links to other ways of getting support through this guide.

You may also be able to access a library more local to yourself, if in the UK, rather than the University of Huddersfield's library. We are part of a scheme called SCONUL Access that enables this. Once you've started course at the University, you'll be able to register via the SCONUL Access website, stating which university library you'd like to visit and we'll send you official approval to do so. You'll then be able to register locally at that university library, use their physical resources, and sometimes also use their computers.  It doesn't include full access to that library's electronic resources as that use will only be for their own staff and students. However, most of our electronic resources are available to use remotely.

As a University of Huddersfield student, you'll also have access to WiFi via Eduroam, not just at Huddersfield, but at many sites across the UK and Europe. Look out for it at other educational institutions, NHS sites in the UK and many public buildings. Please check our eduroam page for more information.
