Library Services for Studying Online: Getting started

Introduction

Welcome to our guide to Library Services for Studying Online. These pages have been created to help you to use Library and IT services whilst studying off-campus.

Click on the tabs across the page to be taken to further information.

We also recommend the University Induction Resource on Brightspace which is an introduction to studying at Huddersfield. This is available to all students and contains useful information and short videos which will answer many of your questions about studying online.

For the latest information on access to the Library building, computers, and books, see the Library Services FAQs.

Key online services

These services will help you keep on top of your studies. They are all accessible online.

MyHud is an online ‘one-stop-shop’ that brings access to systems and information together into one location. This is a good place to start to explore virtual services as it brings together all of the different University systems into one place. Once logged in using your usual University of Huddersfield username and password, you will have easy access to email, your library account, your timetable, and other systems.

Brightspace: the University’s virtual learning environment which provides access to module information, course content, and discussion forums supporting your studies. When you log in you will see a home page for your school that contains important information. There will also be areas for each module that you are enrolled on.

Brightspace Pulse: this is a free app you can use on your mobile device to keep up-to-date with the latest announcements from your modules. Search for 'Brightspace pulse' on your app store.

Summon: the University Library search engine. Searches through quality online academic materials which academic staff and librarians have purchased. This is an essential resource to help you with your studies. You can find more information about Summon as well as video tutorials on how to use it on the "Finding Information" tab of this guide

Office365Students have access to the full suite of Microsoft Office software, plus online apps and cloud storage in OneDrive. Access all the online software using the Office365 button at the top of your University email account. You can also download Office software on up to five devices (e.g. your own laptop, desktop computer or tablet).

HudHelp: Find the answers to commonly asked questions and request support with IT, Library and other support needs.

HudStudy: Software, technology and training to support everyone with studying, learning and working more effectively and efficiently.
