A guide to Open Access at the University of Huddersfield

Elsevier Read & Publish Agreement 2022-2024

The Elsevier-UK Institutions Agreement provides free and unlimited open access publishing to University of Huddersfield authors in Elsevier’s Core hybrid journals, Cell Press and The Lancet journals.

To be eligible under this agreement articles must have an acceptance date between 1.1.2022 - 31.12.2024 and meet the following Author, Journal and Article type criteria.

Eligible Authors

To be eligible, individuals must have an affiliation with the University of Huddersfield. This includes students who are enrolled at or accredited to the institution, as well as teaching and research staff who are employed by or otherwise accredited to the University. In the case of articles with multiple authors, only the corresponding author can qualify as an Affiliated Author.

The corresponding author must be responsible for managing the publication process of an article, from submission to post-acceptance, and must be the one who corresponds with the Publisher.

To help with the approval process authors should use their University of Huddersfield email address and ensure they select the correct affiliation from the drop-down search during the submission process

Please note: papers with corresponding authors who are honorary, visiting or NHS members of staff without a contract of employment will not normally be eligible to use this agreement.

Eligible Journals

The eligible article must be published in an eligible hybrid journal. Fully gold open access journals are not included in this agreement.

Click here to search for participating Elsevier journals across a range of disciplines.

When publishing in eligible hybrid journals, authors do not have to pay an article publishing charge (APC) but please note that journal title eligibility may be subject to change by the publisher.

If you're unsure on the eligibility of a title please contact the Open Access Team.

Eligible Article Types

For Elsevier's hybrid journals the article type must be one of the following:

  • Research and Review articles
  • Case Reports
  • Data in Brief
  • Microarticle
  • Original Software Publication
  • Protocol
  • Replication Study
  • Short Communication
  • Short Survey
  • Video Article
  • Practice Guideline

For The Lancet, only full length articles are eligible and for hybrid Cell Press journals, review articles and short survey article types are not eligible.

Please note: this agreement will not cover colour, image or page charges.

Licence options

Authors have a choice between a commercial (CC BY) or non-commercial (CC BY-NC-ND) license. The licence choice is dependent on the journal selected. Please refer to the journal's homepage for specific details. If your article is UKRI-funded please contact oa@hud.ac.uk to check UKRI eligibility and licence requirements.

Rights Retention Statement position

Elsevier does not intend to reject or reroute submitted manuscripts or divert manuscripts to alternative journals due to including a Rights Retention statement when the version of record is published OA via the agreement.   Jisc and Elsevier will monitor and review this to ensure value of the agreement to institutions is maintained.
